Normally, when I write, I lay ground work and construct a backstory to bring everyone into the same reference. Not going to do that here. I don’t think I need to.
Racist (ex-)cop, and convicted murderer Derek Chauvin is up for sentencing. The State is asking for 30 years. Sentencing guidelines give a max of 15, but aggravating factors laid out in the prosecution’s document argue for longer incarceration.
On the other side, the D-bag’s lawyer thinks probation is appropriate, along with time served. That’s right, they view a few months in jail to be about right for slowly murdering a man on the street. Remember that, George didn’t get shot and die quickly. He suffocated. Slowly. Intentionally.
But sure, probation.
How long is ‘normal’ for murderers? 13 years before parole. At least, that is according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Corrections Reporting Program.
So, there is a discrepancy there. 13 years…. 13 weeks. Something like that. Why should this murderer get a pass? Well, apparently, he’s a first time offender. Though, I would argue that his history of other use of force abuses should count as not the first time. But he was also a public servant!!! No wait, I want my public servants held to a higher standard. He violated the public trust and murdered someone. Intentionally.
His last excuse? Jail will be really hard for him. He’ll be targeted. And cops die young, so lengthy jail time will really be ‘life’ in jail. Umm. Yeah. OK, I could write a dissertation with everything that is wrong with the US corrections system. Inmate assaults on each other make the list. But, I don’t see what makes Derek special. Oh, he killed a black man on camera because he was a racist piece of shit so other black people might want revenge? Cops do badly in jail, especially racist murdering cops? Yeah, but he’ll also get to fit in with all of his white supremacist buddies. Win some, lose some.
As for dying early, well, lots of groups die sooner than the average. Let’s compare Derek’s potential remaining lifespan with the remaining time on George’s clock. Hmm.
