Mitch, Mitch, Mitch. You don’t get it both ways Hon…
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday it’s “quite stupid” for corporations to speak out against the Georgia voting law, intensifying his warnings for big business to stand down as Congress delves into President Joe Biden’s infrastructure package and other defining issues.”
I don’t think anyone has to remind the ol’Mitcheroo how much politics and money is intertwined. Nor remind him of the fact that politics is supposed to reflect the will of those GIVING the money. I mean what would the point even be if you gave someone money to represent your interests and then that person used it NOT for that purpose? Business is only doing what it does: spending its money wisely, to make protect themselves.
The fact that politicians want to make grand political gestures, of any kind, puts them at risk of alienating those donors. And that’s just what Georgia did: pander to a group who were affronted by an honest representation of an honest election. And lo… business said unto those in power who fervently wished that the right to vote would be restricted to Those-Who-Would-Only-Vote-The-Right-Way: “Fuck off, we’re taking our ball AND our playground and going where there is less oppressive fuckery.”
Really, what did anyone expect? It’s not like the scenario is without precedent. And what, suddenly THIS time Jim Crow is going to end up being everyone’s best friend? Bitch, please. If it’s so very important to you to restrict voting, then do it. Just don’t cry about consequences.
