Religious Exceptionalism

A big chunk of country is suddenly in the middle of a religious revolution. They’re tossing out their old god and replacing them with a new one. Down with Christ. In with Vaccine-hate.

Many sane organizations are requiring employees to be vaccinated. Now, virtually everyone in the US is vaccinated against something. Most people had MMR when they were kids, or any number of others since then. But Covid.. well that’s a bridge too far. They have reasons for this. Some stupid: ‘Trump said not to.’ Some not so stupid, but still stupid: ‘It all happened so fast.’

People who are down with the stupid are refusing to get the vaccine. Some have been fired, or otherwise asked to leave. And then there is the 3rd category trying desperately to change their religion to something… ANYTHING… that is against it. The problem being that Judaism, Islam, Catholic, and Evangelical doctrines don’t have a problem with vaccines. You have to really start looking for fringe groups to find anything that has an actual doctrine against vaccination.

For the most part, that’s because old men in huts 3000 years ago didn’t know shit about it. And judging from the comments recently, most people still don’t know shit about it.

So, they just say it’s a ‘sincerely held belief’ and hope that it gets them through this issue. It does, but it doesn’t. Honestly, that goes back to juvenile games we played as kids. “I can say fucker because it’s my religion to be allowed to say it! You can’t stop me, freedom of religion, fucker!” The people doing this… never learned much past that.

Some employers give in rather than fight this sort of thing in court, but the vaccine nutbags don’t like the rules that generally come with it either. Things like “you have to wear a mask; you can’t come into crowded rooms with others; you must get tested multiple times per week; ” are fairly standard. The first two are to protect the asshole who isn’t vaccinated and the third is to protect everyone else once the asshole invariably gets infected.

Oh my god, the humanity. Now they’re back to looking for religious reasons not to wear a mask. Or they’re back to “I have a medical condition that makes it so I can’t wear a mask”. Honestly, if that were true for even one millionth of the people who claimed it, we would have the largest collection of rare diseases on the planet. My grandmother who smoked for most of here life, had lung cancer, has both COPD / Emphysema, who regularly gets the pneumonia, and is on oxygen… she wears a mask. I’m sure you’ve got it worse than her right? I see you walking upright for more than 10 feet while carrying on a conversation. Are you sure? Be glad she won’t get close to you because she’s wicked with that cane and has no tolerance for your brand of ‘medical condition’.

So pardon me if I tell you right now that your religion exception is bullshit. It’s not religion. The same as your health condition and every other contortion of logic you’ve been through to get your way.

Let’s just call it what it is. You’re a coward. You’re afraid. Maybe you don’t like needles. Maybe someone convinced you that vaccines have side effects. Maybe you’re afraid that you don’t have complete control over your own life. Whatever your particular reason, you’re a vicious little sociopath who will do whatever mental gymnastics needed to avoid doing anything that might help others.

I’m done feeling remorse or empathy for you. Every time I read about another one of you dying after months of being a monumental shit about vaccines, I have taken to smiling. I used to be sad about your deaths. Now I’m just sad for the family members or friends who told you over and over again that you were wrong. But for you? Nothing. I raise a pint to your removal from the world stage. A lesson to the rest of your ilk that maybe, just maybe, they can take to heart before they die too.

Until you manage to find a way to die from your own stupidity, let me introduce your to my own sincerely held belief: you can go fuck yourself.
